Myspace sucks

A lot of artists and bands publishing their music via Jamendo also have an artists page on Myspace. There’s nothing special about that. This is where most bands do their publicity and their networking, from the local bands up to the big guys and girls.

That was my initial idea as well: have a Myspace page where I can put some new songs on, doing some networking, see how my music is picked up. At that moment, I didn’t know Jamendo yet. Yes, My Firefox browser in Mandriva Linux did contain a button with “Jamendo” on it, but no, I never clicked on it. So I went for the Myspace page.

Creating the page was no problem: just click a few links, fill in some fields here and there and press OK. OK? No way! Because to start with, I wanted to modify the look and feel of my page, adapt the stylesheet to my own taste. And that’s where things went all wrong. Because the link to modify the look and feel of my page sent me to the “gigs” page all the time.

I sent a message to the support team of Myspace. And the answer I got, was that they “where sorry but they didn’t provide any HTML help”. That was not my problem. So I reply that that was the most useless answer I ever received, and repeated my question about the broken link. Then they replied that this was a known problem and that they were working on it. I had to try again later and see if the problem still occured.

That was half a year ago. Recently (about a month ago, I guess), I retried to modify the stylesheet, but I still got the broken link: I was redirected to the gigs page again. Instead fo sending a new complaint to the support team, I decided to remove my account. But that was were it went wrong again: I wasn’t able to remove my account. The procedure in the FAQ was only applicable to individual users, not to artists accounts. So I had to send a complaint to the support team anyhow. And guess what their answer was (you’re not going to believe this): “where sorry but they didn’t provide any HTML help”. I guess this is some standard reply when they can solve your problem in a minute… So again, I had to explain them that I wasn’t requesting HTML support, but I wanted to remove my account instead.

Meanwhile I discovered the posibilities of Jamendo, initially by browsing through different categories of music. I found out that there are really some gems to be found in this huge music collection. If you don’t bother about well known artist, but merely look for music you like, this is really a great source. After a little while I concluded that this could a great medium to have my music heard. And that’s what I did: I uploaded a first set of songs. Lateron I found out that could add a blog… Just what I wanted to have to tell the story behind the music, etc.

After more than 2 weeks I got the confirmation that my account was removed. Finally… No more Myspace for me. To me, Jamendo is all I need!
